Cooperation in the field of youth and sport

The youth policy is another field of ongoing cooperation between Azerbaijan and Lithuania. A relevant agreement on cooperation in this field was signed between the two countries on October 26, 2007. The document was signed by the Minister of Youth and Sport of Azerbaijan, Azad Rahimov, and the Minister of Social Security and Labour of Lithuania, Vilija Blinkeviciute.

The agreement envisages development of cooperation on implementation of joint projects in this field and organizing events with participation of youth organizations from the two countries.

With the goal to implement the Minutes of the 2nd meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission, a joint summer camp of Azerbaijani and Lithuanian youths was organized on 24 to 31 August, 2012. The summer camp was attended by 23 Lithuanian youths and 23 Azerbaijani youths. A conference, intellectual events, visits to ancient and interest places were organized as part of the summer camp.

The Lithuanian youths were first familiarized with Baku and visited places of interest and several historical and modern museums of the city. Later they visited a modern museum built in Gobustan reserve and got familiarized with historical Gobustan monuments.

A conference of Azerbaijani and Lithuanian youths was organized as part of the visit. During the conference, presentations on the educational and youth policies of the two countries were held. A brainstorming session was organized as well. The participants of the session made discussions on four topics including culture, sports, media, education and youth exchange and prepared joint projects. Moreover, a Cultural Night was organized in Gabala. The youths also visited “Genocide cemetery” in Guba.

The Ministry of Youth and Sport and Azerbaijan Student Youth Organizations Union, together with Lithuania-based Multizoom company, realized a social project titled “A light world” aimed at ensuring the road safety of population, particularly in late hours, under the slogan of “See in the darkness” for the first time in Azerbaijan.

Winners of an essay contest titled “What do I know about Azerbaijan?” held among university students in Lithuania visited Azerbaijan on 24 June to 6 July, 2013. During the visit, the winning students received broad information about Azerbaijan’s economic development, population, language, traditions and religion, its role in international politics, historical relations with the world countries.

Lithuanian youths also joined “Start-change-develop” project, implemented within European Commission’s Youth in Action program, in Baku on September 9 to 15, 2013. 

The Eastern Partnership Youth Forum took place in Kaunas from 22-25 October 2013, in the framework of Lithuania’s Presidency of the Council of the EU and the Eastern Partnership. The Forum brought together about 200 young people, representatives of youth organizations, youth experts of Action Programme countries and the representatives of six Easter Partnership programme countries. Forum participants stressed the importance of non-formal education/learning and exchanged examples of successful projects. The programme of the Forum was designed to strengthen youth work in the context of cooperation between Eastern Partnership and Youth in Action Programme countries.

On March 24, 2014, a photo exhibition titled “Azerbaijan in  the eyes of Lithuanian youths” was opened in Mykolas Romeris University located in Vilnius and lasted one month.

Lithuanian youths also attended the Baku World Forum of Young Scientists on May 27 to 28, 2014.

On the 15th of December, 2014 In Lithuania, Kaunas there was DJs competition  «DJ Contest», which was held by the Azerbaijani Youth of Lithuania (AYOL) with financial support of Youth Foundation under the President of Azerbaijan and with the assistance of the Association of Lithuanian DJs. The main objective of the project was to promote Azerbaijani culture among Lithuanian youth and the general public of the country, to promote the integration of Azerbaijani national music in the European culture. 

On December, 2015 International Intellectual Festival "Azerbaijani flag" was held in the capital of Lithuania. The Fectival was organized by Intellectual Games Club "Ateshgyah" and the European Association of Intellectual Games with financial support of Youth Foundation under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Within 2 days tournament of national intellectual games "Khamsa", brain-ring and "What? Where? When?" were held.   

The international tournament on intellectual games" Znatokiada-Caspian Cup 2016" organized by the Ministry of Youth of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Sport was held on 28-30 May 2016. The team from Lithuania participated in the tournament.   

On 2 July 2016 an international forum of young entrepreneurs within "Ganja European Youth Capital 2016" programme was held  with the financial support of the Youth Foundation under the President of Azerbaijan in Ganja. Businesswomen from many European countries including Lithuania participated in the event. They shared their experinces and presented successful stories.   

An essay contest titled “What do I know about Azerbaijan?” organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sport and the Ministry of Foreign Affairas of Azerbaijan was held  in February-Aprel, 2015. The winners of the competition from Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Bhutan, Czech Republic, France, India, Lithuania, Mexico, Montenegro, Romania and Serbia paid a visit to Azerbaijan on 10-20 July, 2016. During the visit winners had an opportynity to see the sights of the capital and other cities and get acquainted with the culture, history and traditions of Azerbaijan. 

The two countries also maintain close cooperation in the sports field.

On July 8, 2010, Azerbaijan’s national field hockey team participated in a training exercise in Siauliai, Lithuania, with the view to prepare for the European Championship.

On May 16, 2011, Chingiz Huseynzadeh, the vice-president of Azerbaijan National Olympic Committee, visited Lithuania. An agreement of cooperation between the parties was signed during the visit. In accordance with the document, Lithuania and Azerbaijan will closely cooperate in the field of sports and help each other for development.

On August 21 to 26, 2012, Azerbaijan’s U-17 football team attended traditional international tournament organized in Palanga, Lithuania.

On December 14 to 15, 2012, Lithuanian sportsmen participated in IWF Grand Prix – “Baku International Cup” hosted by Baku.

Azerbaijani sportsmen attended European Weightlifting Championship among male and female teenagers on September 7 to 8, 2013; European Weightlifting Championship in December, 2013. 

Lithuanian sportsmen participated in “Great Silk Way” traditional international boxing tournament on March 7 to 9, 2014; and 30th European Artistic Gymnastics Championship on June 13 to 15, 2014, in Baku.

Azerbaijani sportsmen attended European Field Hockey Championship on July 10 to 13, 2014, in Lithuania. 

On the 2-4th of August, 2014 there was the International Track Cycling Championship Panevezys 2014 in Lithuania. Azerbaijani cyclists have claimed 4 medals, including 2 gold, a silver and a bronze medals.

On the 8-10th of November, 2014, in Kaunas, Lithuania members of the Azerbaijani Youth Organization participated in Karate Kuoksin European Championship for young people aged 16-22. Sportsmen returned to the motherland with a gold and a silver medal won at the Championship.

On the 18th of February, 2015 Azerbaijan`s Ambassador Hasan Mammadzade and President of the National Olympic Committee of Lithuania Daina Gudzineviciute had a meeting. They exchanged views about the First European Games to be held in Baku on June 12-28. Mr. Mammadzade said President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and first lady Mehriban Aliyeva attached great importance to the excellent organization of the Baku 2015 First European Games. 

On the 4th of March, 2015 a press conference on informing the Lithuanian society about the Baku 2015 First European Games was held organized with the support of the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Lithuania and Lithuanian Olimpic Commitee. Prime-minister of Lithuania Algirdas Butkevicius, members of the Seimas, the Director General of the Department of Physical Education and Sports of Lithuania Eddis Urbonavicus, the President of Lithuanian Olympic Committee, Lithuania's political and sports figures, famous sportsmen took part.       

On the 7-8th of March, 2015 there was the International Track Cycling Championship Panevezys 2015 in Lithuania. Azerbaijani cyclists took part in this championship and claimed 1 gold and 1 silver medals.

On the 12-28th of June, 2015 Lithuanian sport team participated in Baku 2015 European Games. Sportsmen claimed a gold and a silver medals in swimming, two bronze medals in sambo, a gold medal in canoe sprint, a bronze medal in beach volleyball and a bronze medal in badminton competitions.

In November, 2015 the Lithuanian National Olimpic Committee issued a magazine "The warmth of Baku" which was dedicated to the Europaen Games took place in Baku. The magazine includes detailed summaries of sport events as well as sport achievements of Lithuanian sportsmen. 

On June 13, 2016 Azer Mirzoyev, a chess player from Azerbaijan, took the third place in the international tournament held in Panevezys city. 

On the 16-19th of March, 2017 FIG World Cup was held in the National Gymnastics Arena in Baku. Lithuanian gymnast Tomas Kuzmičkas took the third place in the final round of the men's tournament.
